1 Bellwork: What is this? We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. 3 In a confederacy, the states have most of the power and the national government is weak. There is no chief executive to carry out the laws that are created. Stronger Central government – National/State Executive Branch – President, VP, impeachment

4 How the Constitution Fixed Our Country There are no national courts to settle disputes between the states. Congress is responsible to the states- the states have too much power. Creation of the Supreme Court Congress can regulate states

5 How the Constitution Fixed Our Country 9 of 13 states have to approve a law for it to be passed. The national government cannot tax the citizens- only the states can. 2/3 majority of Congress Federal taxes & state taxes

6 How the Constitution Fixed Our Country There is no way to regulate trade among states. Every state has a different currency. Regulation of trade One U.S. currency

8 Federalism & Separation of Powers Federalism - a system of government where the powers are shared by the central (federal) and state governments. –Federal law supersedes state law
