Cell Wall This is the outer layer of plant cells, yeast cells and bacterial cells In plants it is made of cellulose It helps plants cells keep their structure and stops them bursting or shrivelling when water moves in or out by osmosis

Nucleus The biggest organelle in the cell It is where DNA is stored in a cell including the genetic information needed to make the enzymes for respiration It is NOT the brain of the cell The nucleus has a membrane around it Animal, plant and yeast cells have a nucleus but bacterial cells don’t!

Mitochondria Sometimes called the “power house” of the cell It contains the enzymes needed for aerobic respiration Energy is released here In muscle tissue you get a lot of mitochondria because these cells need to release a lot of energy These are found in animal, plant and yeast cells but NOT bacterial cells

Ribosomes Small snowman shaped organelles Ribosomes are responsible for making proteins Both animal and plant cells have ribosomes so they can make proteins

Vacuole Vacuoles are found in plant cells not animal cells You sometimes get them in yeast cells They tend to be large and in the middle of the cell They store sugars, salts and water

Chloroplast Chloroplasts are only found in plant cells Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll They are the site of photosynthesis

Cell Membrane This surrounds plant and animal cells It allows gases and water to pass into about out of the cell so they can be used for respiration and photosynthesis

Cytoplasm The cytoplasm is the liquid part of the cell Both plant and animal cells have a cytoplasm All the organelles are kept in the cytoplasm Anaerobic respiration takes place in the cytoplasm

Circular DNA Instead of having a nucleus bacterial cells have circular DNA It is sometimes called a nucleoid This is found in the middle of the cell and DOESN’T have a membrane
