2 A Alexander Hamilton- Author of many of the federalist papers; First secretary of treasury, Leader of Federalist Party. Anthony, Susan B.-Leader in women’s suffrage (right to vote) movement 50 years to effort to attain equal rights for women.

3 B Blockade- When goods are prevented from going into or out of an area. Bernado De Galvez- Spaniard who held of British in New Orleans, but allowed Americans use of the port.

4 C Checks and Balances- Each branch makes sure the others are working the way they are supposed to. Constitution Ratified(1787)- Becomes Blueprint for American Government.

5 D Democratic Party- Modern Democratic Party began with the election of 1828 Andrew Jackson became the first Democrat when the Democratic-Republicans split. Dawes Act- Indian policy that broke reservations into individuals land plots.

6 E Eli Whitney- Invented the cotton gin and interchangeable parts. Elizabeth Cady Stanton- Author of Declaration of the rights of women seeking equal rights for women. Her and Lucretia Mott held the first women’s rights convention in Seneca Falls, NY.

7 F Federalism- Power of the government is shaved between the states and national government. Fugitive Slave Act- Act that helped slave owners recover their runaway slaves from the North.(Part of Compromise of 1850).

8 G Gibbons v. Ogden(1824)- Said that federal government had the power to regulate trade between states. Great Compromise- It called for a Bi-cameral Congress with population based representation in the House, and two representatives per state in the Senate.

9 H Homestead Act- Law that a person could claim 160 cares of land in the western territories(sooner). Horace Mann- Father of Public Education; believed all children had the right to free education.

10 I Industrialism- The large –scale introduction of manufacturing, advanced technical enterprise, and other productive economic activity into an area, society, country, etc. Interchangeable Parts- uniform pieces that can be made in large quantities to replace other identical pieces.

11 J John Deere- inventor of the steel plow John peter Zenger- journalist; his trail helped establish hedge of freedom of the press

12 K King George lll-king of England during the American revolution James K. Polk-America and Mexico argued over the border between the Texas and Mexico

13 L Louisiana purchase- land bought by the U.S. in 1803 from Rocky Mts to the Mississippi river Lexington-first battle

14 M Minimum government-idea that the citizens have the right to privacy and independence of control Manifest Destiny-the idea that the united states was destined to expand from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean

15 N Northwest Ordinance-established government for northwest territory Nullification Compromise- Henry clay’s compromise to end

16 O Ogden v. Gibbons- said that federal government had the power to regulate trade between states Orgon trail-the great plains, along the Platte River and through the south

17 p Property Rights- right to own property Protective tariff's- Taxes on imported goods that are designed to help the united states

18 Q John Quincy Adams-6 TH president member of congress 7 favored strong national government Quakers believed that every individual had an “inner light”

19 R Ralph Waldo Emerson- writer and poet; popular the idea of transcend dentalism

20 S Sufferage-right to vote
