The American colonists rebelled against Britain because they had begun to think of themselves more as Americans rather than English citizens. Another reason the colonists rebelled is that they resented the king and Parliament taxing them and telling them how to do things.

The Continental Congress appointed a committee to prepare a document declaring the colonists’ independence from England and a list of grievances against England. In presenting the Declaration of Independence to the king, the Continental Congress had effectively declared war on England.
