Forming, Storming, Norming, Performing, and Adjourning

2 Forming Stage A stage of initial orientation and interpersonal testing
First time individuals are coming together to form a group THINK: “What can or does the group offer me?” “What will I be asked to contribute?” “Can my needs be met while my efforts serve the task needs of the group?” “What is my identity in this group dynamic?”

3 STORMING Stage A stage of conflict over tasks and ways of operating as a group Tensions can emerge when people of different backgrounds are beginning to interact with one another Subgroups can emerge Attention begins to shift towards obstacles in the way of task accomplishment Finding ways to meet group goals while also meeting individual needs

4 Norming Stage A stage of consolidation around task and operating agendas Co-operation is key Each member playing an important role Group starts to feel united

5 Performing Stage A stage of teamwork and focused task performance
More mature groups, organized, and work well as a team Clear and structured goals to be met by group Challenges: group cohesion and updating work

6 Adjourning Stage A stage of task accomplishment and eventual disengagement This includes committees, task forces, and projects Sense of accomplishment and success within group Painful for groups who formed a strong bond
