2 Review The 18 th Amendment (Prohibition) outlawed the making of, transporting, and the selling of alcohol.

3 Rise to Power That led to people buying alcohol illegally. The people who produced, transported, and sold it were known as “bootleggers”. Small groups (gangs) grew violent to protect their selling territory. Organized crime grew into being bigger, stronger, and more violent.

4 Speakeasies Secret bars were set up to drink alcohol. You had to know a password and “speakeasy” (whisper) it to the doorman to enter. There were 30,000- 100,000 speakeasies just in New York City.
