3  They voted like their husbands or fathers  Entered the workforce in 1920’s in largest numbers  Worked as nurses, teachers, domestic servants – lowest paid jobs

4 Cut hair raised skirts, used make-up, smoked, drank, went to clubs, and were seen as independent Flappers

5  A shift and movement from the country to the city

6 What was their role? Automobiles

7 Required schooling led to a decrease of child labor, immigrants learned English Education

8  New members were farmers, workers or small business owners  Peak membership was in mid 1920 in the millions – declined in the late 1920’s

9  Fundamentalism – literal interpretations of the Bible  Tennessee – passed a law made teaching Evolution illegal  John Scopes arrested for teaching evolution  Found guilty – fined $100  Overturned in 1960’s  Was this constitutional?

11  Fought to outlaw alcohol  18 th Amendment made it illegal to manufacture, transport, or sell alcohol in U.S.  It was not illegal to drink alcohol

12  It DID reduce the amount of alcohol consumed  Enforcing it was almost impossible  Smuggled it from Canada and Mexico  bootleggers.  A doctor could prescribe alcohol

14  Chicago crime boss  Bootlegger  Owned speakeasies  Bought off police  Organized crime increased during prohibition
