GRANT APPLICATION GUIDE

GRANT PROCESS OVERVIEW This presentation includes the following topics which will assist you in completing your application. Tent Schools International Core Values Your proposal’s “innovative” approach Your proposed program’s outcomes Request amount and budget

WHAT IS THE TENT SCHOOLS INTERNATIONAL MISSION ? “Tent Schools International demonstrates the love of Jesus Christ for displaced and refugee children by providing safe, compassionate learning environments that exchange chaos and loss for peace and opportunity.” The purpose of our grants is to provide support for those who are committed to carrying out the Tent Schools International mission.

DEFINITION OF TERMS Tent Schools International uses the following terms to identify the specific target population we are called to serve. All grant proposals must be likewise targeted to serve this group of children. “Displaced/Refugee – a person who flees or is forcibly removed from his/her own home area or country due to war, persecution or natural disaster. “Safe, Compassionate Learning Environments” - known often as “learning centers” or “tent schools” (structural material may vary) the partner commits to ensuring such structures are providing a secure environment, where students will find compassionate teachers, reflecting the love of Jesus Christ, and where measurable improvement in academic skills is emphasized. Tent Schools International funds so-called temporary school set-ups and does not invest in permanent brick/mortar construction projects.

EXTENT OF SERVICE AND SUPPORT Tent Schools International services include the following … Our primary service is providing funding assistance for the initial “start-up” costs, and in some cases the first year’s operational support, of a tent school serving displaced children in a particular location (usually a refugee camp). We may consider extended support for years Two and Three after the initial first year provided the partner and the project reviews meet or exceed stated goals and demonstrate sustainability plans are in place to continue the school’s operation after year three and the conclusion of Tent Schools support. Tent Schools International does not cover ongoing costs, operate, own or manage schools beyond our stated commitment levels and terms as agreed to by TSI and its partner who is responsible for the school’s success and operation.

PART ONE: TENT SCHOOLS INT. CORE VALUES In this section we will: 1.Identify the Tent Schools International core values 2.Ask, “How does your proposal reflect these and other values?”

VALUE # 1: DEMONSTRATE THE LOVE OF JESUS All our relationships and programs will evidence Jesus’ love through caring, compassionate words and deeds which respect the dignity and worth of every human being as being created in God’s image.

VALUE # 2: DELIVER QUALITY EDUCATION Tent Schools partnerships are based on mutual commitments to addressing educational needs of displaced children through qualified teachers and effective, proven educational resources which will result in creating maximum impact.

VALUE # 3: CREATE INCLUSIVE COMMUNITIES We believe education is a community responsibility. Local leaders, educators, parents/guardians and agencies and other stakeholders know best how to reach and teach their children. We strive in all our partnerships to ensure all voices are heard while planning, implementing and evaluating each program or project.

VALUE #4: PRACTICE MUTUAL ACCOUNTABILITY Holding all stakeholders responsible for achieving their objectives is achievable when all parties are appreciated and heard in the planning and implementation process.

VALUE #5: CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT Throughout the implementation of the granted program, all parties will participate in an ongoing assessment process using prescribed bench makes of achievement toward the goals and outcomes as agreed upon in at the outset of the partnership.

VALUE # 6 BUILDING RELATIONSHIPS Tent Schools International continually seeks partnerships with those demonstrating holistic models addressing security, nutrition, health, sanitation and physical, psychosocial, mental and other conditions affecting a refugee child’s success in learning.

TRAINING EXERCISE # 1: “HOW DOES YOUR PROPOSAL REFLECT THESE CORE VALUES?” 1.Read the core values again. 2.How will your proposal specifically reflect these core values? 3.Will your proposal also include other core values you hold as important?

CONGRATULATIONS! You have completed Part One of the Training Program: “Our Core Values” Part Two begins with the next slide.

PART TWO: YOUR INNOVATIVE APPROACH Innovation – New Circumstances require new Solutions

INNOVATION IS REQUIRED. To bring solutions to a situation demands creative approaches! Bringing quality learning opportunities to children who have been subject to displacement, such as “refugees,” especially in temporary situations demands a high degree of innovation.

IS YOUR PROPOSAL INNOVATIVE? The word “innovative” means, “new and creative, especially in the way that something is done.” A basic question to answer in your proposal application is, “How are (or will) we reach and teach displaced children and keep them in school? Be creative. Be innovative. Bring your community stakeholders (parents/guardians, leaders, teachers, clergy, other n.g.o.s together and propose something new, engaging and sustainable.

PART THREE: OUTCOMES-MEASURES-TIMELINES What outcomes (results) do you want to achieve? How will you measure progress toward the outcomes? What is your timeline?

“WHAT ARE YOUR OUTCOMES?” Review your proposal. What expected outcomes do you hope to see for the children who would participate in your proposed program?

MEASURES Measurements are used to chart progress toward achieving the outcomes. One example might be: “Fifty percent of all the students in the tent school program will reach math and reading efficiencies by…. (end date) In your proposal, list your measurements and progress assessment dates.)

TIMELINES: START-UP TO EVALUATION To be realistic, your project needs a timeline for starting, measuring progress and adjusting the program to meet the outcomes. One example of a tutoring timeline might be:  Start date - identifying and recruiting children targeted for the program  Periodic testing dates - to chart steady improvement or, if not, tutoring revisions  Review date – evaluating the program or project for making charting progress, recommending changes, adjustments, etc.

YOU NOW HAVE YOUR PROPOSAL. Congratulations! You have completed Part Three of the Training Program. Now you are ready to do the numbers. Proceed to the next slide.

TENT SCHOOLS PROPOSAL BUDGET 1.Prepare the budget in US Dollars. 2.Itemize sub-total costs for each category in your proposed program. (Tent Schools may be interested in funding one category within a broader proposal). 3.Include local contributions (monetary/in-kind) toward the total cost of the program.

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS Grant recipients are required to submit: Financial Reports – a six-month and one year accounting of how funds were or were not spent. Project Reports – submit at least one story and photo each month and a quarterly report (every three months) on how the program is proceeding toward meeting outcomes.

BE CLEAR. BE REALISTIC. BE SUCCESSFUL. Congratulations! You have completed the training program! We hope this program has been helpful as you complete the proposal-writing process.

CELEBRATE WITH YOUR STORY. Your challenges, heartbreaks and successes will help inspire and equip others, and advance the mission of “demonstrating the love of Jesus” toward displaced children! Celebrate children and glorify God!
