2 INVADERS OF MESOPOTAMIA The Hittites built a strong kingdom in Asia Minor. They were one of the first people to master ironworking. While other people were using bronze weapons the Hittites were able to make iron swords and spears. They also used the chariot which allowed them to move quickly around a battlefield. In 1593 they captured Babylon although the assassination of their king meant that they did not rule the city for long. In the 1200s BC, the Assyrians began their conquest of Mesopotamia, Asia Minor, and Egypt. Before attacking, the Assyrian army spread terror by looting villages and burning crops. Anyone who dared to resist them was killed. Once conquered, people were forced to pay heavy taxes. Those who refused were severely punished. Assyrian kings ruled their large empire with the help of local leaders. Each governed a small area, collected taxes, enforced laws, and raised troops for the army. Roads were built to link distant parts of the empire. Divisions slowly weakened the Assyrian empire which fell to a people called the Chaldeans from the Syrian Desert. Nebuchadnezzar, the most famous Chaldean king, rebuilt Babylon into a beautiful city. According to legend, his grand palace featured the famous Hanging Gardens. Trees and flowers grew on its terraces and roofs. From the ground the gardens appeared to hang in the air. INVADERS POSTER Use the sheet you’ve been given to create a poster showing the histories of the Hittites, Assyrians, and Chaldeans. For each show where they came from and the size of their empire at its height. Find pictures showing their civilizations and provide short explanations for any readers.
