World History 3.4 Mr. Burton

Conquest of Mesopotamia Babylon is considered one of the most powerful cities/governments during this time. The king: Hammurabi: is known to be the greatest monarch of Babylon.

Hammurabi’s Code http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDALXORbtR4 Dictates what we do now as a society (some countries/societies apply this still today). Developed 282 laws: some of the most famous: eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth. Website with all the codes: http://www.phillipmartin.info/hammurabi/hammurabi_co deindex.htm

Think-Pair-Share If we did not have laws, what do you think would happen in our society? (Get with your partner with whom you did the conversation with for our reading) Ex. Caeley and Devon, Sydney and Christian.

Invasions of Mesopotamia Hittites, Kassites, Assyrians, Caldeans. Hittites: were one of the first to master iron-working and chariots. The Kassites ruled Babylon for over 400 years.

Assyrian’s Key to Assyrian armies was the ability to have a strong army: well organized and everyone knew his role. Assyrian’s spread fear in opposing countries: would vandalize and destroy crops of local villages. Assyrian’s had high taxes and demanded people to pay them, if they didn’t they would be severely punished (death). Also, Assyrian’s had locals run the city-states.

Chaldeans The Chaldeans: saw that the Assyrian’s were having troubles and attacked and controlled Babylon. Nebuchadnezzar rebuilt Babylon into a beautiful city. Chaldeans studied Astronomy: they kept track of stars, economic, political, and weather events.

Phoenicians Didn’t have a very good army, but they were able to do great trade with other places of the world. Main export item was cedar timber. Traded: silver, ivory, slaves, and traded purple dye (famous among rich people). Most important thing Phoenicians did though was the invention of the alphabet.
