2 Alexander Graham Bell He was born March 3, 1847 in Scotland In 1870, at age 23, he and his parents immigrated to Canada. Many called Bell "the father of the deaf". With both his mother and wife deaf, he hoped to eliminate hereditary deafness. He tried to find ways to make their lives easier. 5 Elizabeth Blackwell  She immigrated from England in 1832 with her family.  Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman doctor in America. Many people did not approve of a woman as a doctor and would not let her practice medicine in the hospitals. Therefore she treated women and children in her home and later in the slums of New York.
