With both his mother and wife deaf, he hoped to eliminate hereditary deafness. He tried to find ways to make their lives easier. 4. Greta Garbo  Greta Garbo was born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson on September 18, 1905. 5. Elizabeth Blackwell  She immigrated from England in 1832 with her family.  Elizabeth Blackwell was the first woman doctor in America. Many people did not approve of a woman as a doctor and would not let her practice medicine in the hospitals. Therefore she treated women and children in her home and later in the slums of New York.
