 Explain the importance of word recognition and meaning vocabulary ?  Describe two strategies you would use to develop word recognition and meaning vocabulary (one strategy for each concept)?

Word Recognition is the ability of a reader to recognize written words correctly and virtually effortlessly. It is sometimes referred to as "isolated Word Recognition" because it entails a reader's ability to recognize words individually—from a list, for example—without the benefit of surrounding words for contextual help.

Why is Word Recognition important? Children need to develop a balance between associating sounds with letters and using the words in a sentence to figure out the word's meaning. Helps to internalize words into vocabulary, thus enabling more fluent reading. Helps to develop good comprehension skills.

What is meaning vocabulary ? Meaning vocabulary is a term that describes how people learn the meanings of words. Children can learn the meanings of words by using context clues, word part instruction, and graphic organizers.

Vocabulary can be divided into three parts. Auditory vocabulary is composed of the words that are heard. Verbal vocabulary is composed of words that are used in speech. Reading vocabulary is composed of words that are seen in print and can be decoded. Acquiring a fluent reading vocabulary requires more than looking up the definition of words in a dictionary. A proper form of instruction is required for children to develop word knowledge in-depth. Students need to be empowered with skills to Develop strategies that will increase the growth of word knowledge.

Why is Meaning Vocabulary Important?  It helps builds the confidence of students to read aloud.  It helps to improve comprehension skills.  It helps students to be fluent in reading a wide range of books  To helps with expression when communicating with others

Strategy for teaching Word Recognition Word Recognition can be taught and reinforced by the use of authentic writing activities. Example : when a child is just learning the parts of his or her body, using the words in a story or sentence allows the child to apply the words in another context.

Strategy for teaching Meaning Vocabulary TIME TO TALK It is important to promote students’ dialogue as they have instructional conversations. We need to provide students with opportunities to use their colloquial language and translate back and forth with scientific and technical terms. We can use this strategy, called interlanguage, to discuss the different explanations of the students’ experiences in the classroom. For example: Student: “We put this smooth powder in the bag along with the crunchy powder and the bag blew up and got hot.” Teacher: “We mixed baking soda and calcium chloride with water resulting in a gas, and heat was released.” Scientist: “The combination of baking soda and calcium chloride is an exothermic reaction with the products of sodium chloride, calcium carbonate, and carbon dioxide.”
