1 Clipping Mask Use a “mask” to create another shape

2 Clipping mask  an object whose shape masks other artwork so that only areas that lie within the shape are visible—in effect, clipping the artwork to the shape of the mask

3 Get ready, get assets  If necessary, download palmtree.tif and save inside jma260/InClass/Illustrator/Images  Start illustrator  New print document  File>Place ---browse to your palmtree image  Do it  Uncheck Link box

4 Linking  Linking means the palm tree would NOT actually be imbedded on the page; instead there would be a “pointer, ”a shortcut, that specified how to find the image.  Deselect all

5 Name  Move so name covers tree portion, as best you can  Name on top Create your name: Old English White 48 points

6 Create mask:  Object>Clipping Mask>Make  Result:

7 Drop Shadow  Effect>Stylize>Drop Shadow  Q : How big is name?  Need to save twice.ai and.png

8 Example 2  Delete name  Add large circle  Make the mask  Mine:

9 Example 3  New file  File>Place island girl.tiff  Reduce size (ctrl--)  Actually shrinks size of artboard  Draw a circle, fill any color  Select the island girl  Shift click the ellipse  Object>clipping mask>Make
