design thinking basic rubric (summative edition)

design thinking skills (review)

scoring: description Exceeds Expectation Meets Expectation Approaches Expectation Missing

scoring: optional quantification 4/4 3.5/4 2.5/4 0/4

empathy Rich descriptions of user empathy, including a variety of surprising insights and deep needs. Human centeredness (user empathy) is expressed through descriptions of human emotion, physical necessities, surprising insights and/or needs on the part of users. Limited descriptions of user empathy with few surprising insights or needs included. Little to no description of user empathy.

prototype In addition to ✔ prototypes are tested in a thorough, engaging manner. Prototyping provides a solution for user needs including a record of the iterations moving from low to high resolution of the prototype describing what was learned from each user test. Prototyping provides partial solution for a user’s needs. Little or no iteration. Little or no prototyping accomplished.

empathy define ideate prototype team Skill Total Score In this prototype for summative assessment, the right side of the chart is a running score of the total scores a student receives in each phase over the course of many projects. This is crude and assumes that number of times through the cycle corresponds to learning. Research is underway that explores this notion. For now, let’s just have this prototype add to the conversation on how we do summative assessment.

empathy 22 define 17.5 ideate 33 prototype 23.5 team 19 Skill Total Score Roughly, this prototype helps indicate which skills this student typically does well and needs to work on. This can help determine group formations and project foci. Obviously this tool becomes more accurate as time goes on, mitigating confounds occurring from potential team grading. These scores do not have be seen as equal. Perhaps one skill is harder to learn. If that is the case, this tool may help determine what areas of design thinking the entire class needs to work on.
