Med 4106 Radio and Popular Music week 1

 Morse code  Titanic  1957 Radio reorganised for television  1979 the Walkman  Radio Digitalisation  Internet

 Samuel Morse develops Morse code by using electronic in different patterns and times for each letter of the alphabet. Morse code can also be signaled by flashing lights and sounds.

 In 1912 when the Titanic crashed the importance of Marconi’s wireless telegraphy was realised when it was used in a life and death situation causing many lives to be saved.

 In 1933 Edwin Armstrong created frequency modulation (FM) radio. FM provides static free broadcasting and carries full frequency to range to the sound of human ear. This was a development in radio as it means that we can now hear it better and be more select in what we listen to.

 When the Walkman came in 1979 it was revolutionary. Kids were now walking round with music in there ears instead of having to listen to it with the family. The radio could now be much more personalised to an individuals preferences – this could be a link or inspiration on how radio has developed through the digital age and how nowadays its extremely personal.

 The digital age hit radio in 1990 when people began to experiment with audio cards and computers to broadcast. This developed through the years as the internet and technologies developed and many stations took a more digitalised approach. This lead to the digital radio we have now where we can listen on demand, catch up and listen to various podcasts. The internet did cause a bit of a copyright problem and therefore there was anew Copyright Act enforced in 1998 for internet radio broadcasters to pay additional royalty fees.

 Many people argue that new technologies have killed radio – however I disagree with this opinion. I think new technologies have embraced radio and radio has adapted well to all the new advances. In 2011 Spotify adds radio to its software allowing users to choose tracks/artists they like and creating a radio station around their tastes. In 2015 Apple Music hit. Apple Music allows users to listen to global radio stations including their main one beats1 which is broadcasted from London, LA and New York. Apple Music also allows listeners to add a track they hear on the radio straight to their library.  Apple Music and Spotify reportedly have over 30 million paying subscribers.
