1 Thinking Mac From Windows

2 The Menu Bar Mac puts their Menu/Task Bars at the top of the desktop, not the bottom, like in windows.

3 The File Menu The “File” menu has several useful functions like making New Folders (shift+command+N), Print, Eject (command E) and Find (command F)

4 The Menu Bar The “Apple” menu has many useful items such as Restart, Shutdown and Recent Items.

5 Programs Are Kept In The “Dock” At The Bottom of the Screen

6 Open Applications An open application (program) is shown by a triangle under the app. (see how Power Point is currently open).

7 Quitting Applications An open application (program) can be quit from the dock by using the mouse to Right+Click the icon and choose quit from the menu.

8 The Trash Can (Recycle Bin) The Dock also contains the trash can (seen here with trash in it), empty by using the mouse to Right+Click on the trash can icon, then choose Empty Trash from the menu.

9 The Eject Icon The Trash Can icon will also change to an Eject icon if you drag any removable media (CD, jump drive, disc, etc.) onto the trash icon.

15 Video Icons Quicktime DV - Raw digital video at full quality, huge files Quicktime MOV - web standard for smaller video & audio files Windows Media Player - similar to MOV files, use Flip 4 Mac to play in QT

16 Photo Icons GIF - low quality web images, do not use in print/TV JPG - standard digital camera output, uses some compression good for video PNG - new web standard, lossless quality, small files TIF - used only in print, high quality images, must be converted for web/TV

18 Windows Do NOT Have Menus Mac windows do not have their own menu bar, always look to the top of the screen for the menu. Look next to the Apple menu to see which application you currently have open.

19 Close Buttons Are On The Left The three buttons are X for Close, - for Minimize or Hide, and + to Maximize within the vertical screen area

20 Closing Windows does NOT close applications Notice that Photoshop, Firefox, Powerpoint, Word and Preview are all still running! Close apps, when you’re done!

21 Use F9 Key to show all open windows at one time.

22 SAVE Early, SAVE Often, SAVE As…

23 Use the arrow down button to open up the complete save dialog box

24 In this box choose WHERE you want to save your file!

25 Always START in the Groups Folder on our file server!

26 Then choose YOUR class’ folder

27 Then choose YOUR folder then press SAVE!

28 You will need to Print! Choose FILE>PRINT or Command +P

29 Choose the Printer - It should be named GPHS Rm 1708 and then Press Print

30 If it does not print, DO NOT keep pressing print, open the Printer Setup Utility

31 Make sure your printer is the default or bolded printer

32 Use the Make Default button if the wrong printer is chosen

33 Double click on the printer and check to see if your job is printing

34 This is an example of a document that IS printing!

35 This is an example of a document that is STOPPED, try Start Jobs

36 If that does not work, you may need to delete the job, start jobs and print again.
