4 Objectives   Define the term food science.   Explain the importance of food science.   Recognize the careers available in food science.   Differentiate between different food samples.

5 What is Food Science?   The study of the substances we eat, their makeup, and the processes used to alter these substances to make them more suitable and available for consumption for a longer time.

6 Importance of Food Science   People who work in food science try to figure out different uses or different applications for particular foods.

7 The Goal   The goal of all of the jobs in this industry is to provide a wholesome food in the desired form when and where the consumer wants it.

8 Product Development   People who work in product development focus on creating new or improved food products.

9 Quality Assurance   These people are usually concerned with the quality of the food.

10 Food Production   People who work where the food is processed and preserved. The products that are prepared are made to meet the consumers demand.

11 Sales and Service   These people deal with the selling of the food products or materials used to produce the products. They may deal with the advertisement and promotion of the food products to the consumer.

12 Regulation and Compliance   These people enforce regulations on the food industry to protect the interests of the consumers. www.usda.gov

13 Food Service   The people mainly work with the preparing and serving of the food in restaurants, cafeterias, and fast-food businesses.

14 The two major professional occupations involved in food science are:   Food scientists: An individual who has been trained in the theory of food systems.   Food technologists: An individual who has similar training as a food scientists but is more involved with short-term problem solving in the food systems.
