JOSHUA WORLEY NOVEMBER 11, 2013 ITEC 7445 – FALL 2013 DR. GOETZEL EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES PROJECT GradeCam

Description and General Purpose What is GradeCam?  GradeCam is online software that allows teachers to grade selected response assessments with any document camera. (ex. multiple choice, true/false, and matching – in groups of five or less)

Additional Features Transfer scores into any electronic grade book. Share assessments with other educators in real-time. Give students immediate personal feedback. Create and print answer forms on plain paper. Link questions to state standards and generate standards-based reports.

Vision The vision for technology at Rehoboth Road is to implement technology to increase student achievement and teacher effectiveness.

Teacher effectiveness Student achievement Real time data to guide instruction Teachers can focus on individual student needs Less time spent grading = more time for planning Individual needs are being met (differentiation) Learning is more relevant How does Gradecam support our vision?

Audience Classroom teachers with access to a document camera (ex: ELMO) or iPad. GradeCam could be used in an elementary, middle, or high school classroom. Technology is used within the classroom so all students will be able to utilize GradeCam.

Equipment/Software Computer for teacher Document camera (Elmo, Smart, iPad, etc…) Printer for answer sheets Internet access

Technical Support The GradeCam’s website is full of tutorials to help teachers setup their account and classes. If teachers don’t see their topic of need, they can submit a request. If the school version is purchased, GradeCam will give administrative rights to a teacher onsite.

Limitations Inability to score short answer questions Free version only allows you to score 10 questions

Cost There are 3 options: 1. Basic: Free version – limits you to 10 questions 2. Plus: $15.00 per month – allows up to 100 questions 3. School/District: $2.50 per student per year – allows you to align questions to state standards.

Funding Grants  Spalding County have Partners in Education that offer grants to local schools.  Technology Grant News is a website that offers descriptions of several grants available (technologygrantnews.com) Title I Funding  RRMS is a Title I school (Ed.gov) Fundraising

Uses Meeting Standards  GradeCam allows teachers to progress monitor to ensure that content standards are being met.  Students will gain understanding and use of GradeCam. Also, they will be looking at their own data and be involved in making decisions about their own learning (NETS-S 6.1)

Uses Cont’d Promotes  Authentic Learning: When students complete assessments with GradeCam, the teacher can provide students with authentic opportunities based on individual data.  Collaborative Learning: Students can be grouped based on immediate data taken in class.  Higher Order: Students can be given access to their data to analyze and make decisions about their own learning.

Uses Cont’d Differentiation  With the ability to score student work in seconds, you can group students based on their data.  Students no longer have to wait days to find out how they did on an assignment (at which point it is no longer relevant to many students).

Research GradeCam is relatively new and no specific research is available, but there are several studies available that suggest that the rate of learning in classrooms where teachers use short cycle formative assessment is approximately double that found in other classrooms (Wiliam 2007).

Research/Teacher Testimonial Teacher Testimonial:  “Before I started using GradeCam, I spent hours outside of the classroom grading papers,” said Jake Anderson, a history teacher at Del Valle High School in Livermore, Calif. “But I still didn’t feel like I was giving my students the feedback that they needed. GradeCam changed that by giving me a quick way to see what students are getting and where they need help.”

Implementation Phase I  A small group of teachers will pilot the program.  There should be one representative from each grade level. These teachers will become experts on the software and be available to train others in Phase II.  Training  Time will be needed for teachers to go on website to: create account, watch tutorials and setup classes.  They will work out any bugs and possible questions that will arise.

Implementation Phase II  Teachers who participated in Phase I will help train and implement GradeCam on a school level.  Training will take place during weekly professional development (RRMS has professional development every Wednesday) Change Model  I will be using the Concerns-Based Adoption Model to evaluate the participants' concerns and level of use of GradeCam within the classroom.

Reflection I can honestly say that while evaluating this technology I thought it was for teachers trying to get out of grading, but I changed my mind after further investigation. GradeCam is much more than an easy way to get a grade. With Gradecam you can provide immediate feedback and assess more often. This technology makes it possible to address gaps in knowledge before they are too big.

Reflection I feel that I have a better understanding of what an effective technology coach does. I wish that everyone in education, who makes decisions, used a change model. I have actually started using GradeCam. It is a great way to use formative practices in class.
