Note to teachers I have checked the clips for at least the first three minutes (unless I have indicated a useful section) and didn’t find anything inappropriate but you may want to check them yourself. Feel free to change the clips to suit yourself. Thanks, Kim

Collecting Data Television Presenters

Context Consider the television shows on your sheet. As a group identify as many identity and situational factors as you can that you think might influence how the presenters speak. What effects do these factors have? Think about: Purpose Audience Genre of show Time it is aired Guests / participants Gender of presenter Age of presenter Regional identity of the presenter

Write any suggestions about factors that they will have in common here:

Think Pair Share Discuss the following questions with your partner before sharing ideas as a class.

What difference does this genre make to a presenter’s speech?

Today’s Aim 1.The purpose of today’s lesson is to generate some data that we can rely on as a class. 2.We are also developing our transcribing skills – you will need these skills for this week’s homework. 3.To inspire you. The television personalities used in today’s lesson are suggestions. If we all write about the same people we won’t write anything particularly unique. If you can think of different presenters that you are interested in then you can follow your own interest if they fit with the task.

Bruno Tonioli We are going to watch a clip of Michael McIntyre impersonating Bruno Tonioli.Bruno Tonioli. What features of Bruno’s speech has Michael McIntyre picked up on? Write your ideas on a post-it.Michael McIntyre

What can we notice about how presenters speak? Michael McIntyre has just modelled for us (on a small scale) what we need to be able to do in this unit of work. We need to be able to identify the features of a television presenter’s speech and consider how they might adapt their speech in different contexts. So, today we’re going to transcribe several presenters and begin to explore and analyse how they speak.

Your Task 1.Make sure that your group has a phone that allows you to access the internet. 2.Find the clip using the link below. 3.Two of you should transcribe a couple of minutes of the clip. 4.Two of you should use the placemat provided to begin to analyse how the presenter speaks. http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=zH9QcRwRJGA

What do you notice about? What the presenter said (the topics that they covered). You might want to make a note of anything that they said that stands out for you. Any unusual words or phrases. The gender of the presenter. Do you think it had any affect on the conversation? How the presenter spoke. What was their tone of voice and the pace of their speech like? How much did the presenter speak? Did they dominate or involve others?

To finish... You have five minutes to prepare to sum up for the rest of the class. I would like you briefly outline anything interesting that you have discovered so far today about the way that your presenter speaks. I would also like you to suggest any other presenters that you think we could explore in connection with your presenter. Finally, can you share your ideas about what we need to know to be able to analyse this data. Make sure that one of your group is prepared to share your thoughts.

Please hand in your transcript. It will be copied for everyone. Homework: You now know how to transcribe. It is your turn to go off and research what you would like the focus of your controlled assessment to be. You will need to find appropriate examples of presenters speaking and transcribe them. Find at least two please. Suggestions: Television presenters Quiz show hosts Chat show hosts Music show presenters Children’s television presenters Daytime television presenters Evening entertainment presenters Reality television presenters Comparing male and female presenters Comparing presenters of different ages.
