2 What is the Telecommunications Industry Dialogue? Launched in March 2013, the “Industry Dialogue” is a group of telecommunications operators and vendors who jointly address freedom of expression and privacy rights in the context of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights Members include: Alcatel-Lucent, AT&T, Millicom, Nokia, Orange, Telefonica, Telenor Group, TeliaSonera, Vodafone Group ID created 10 Guiding Principles addressing freedom of expression (FoE) and privacy as they relate to telecoms sector Companies share best practices and tools for implementing the Guiding Principles in their company operations Collaboration with Global Network Initiative (GNI), a multistakeholder organization, aimed at finding a shared and practical approach to promoting freedom of expression and privacy around the world www.telecomindustrydialogue.org © 2015 Telecommunications Industry Dialogue 2

3 10 Guiding Principles 1.Create relevant policies with Board oversight to prevent, assess and mitigate risks to freedom of expression for telecoms and services 2.Conduct regular human rights impact assessments and due diligence processes 3.Create/maintain operational processes to handle government requests 4.Adopt strategies to respond to impacts on FoE where a government demand is received that is unlawful 5.Always seek to ensure the safety of company personnel at risk 6.Raise awareness and train employees on related policies and processes 7.Share knowledge with stakeholders 8.Report externally on annual basis on implementation of principles 9.Help inform development of policy and regulations to support FoE 10.Examine as a group options for implementing grievance mechanisms www.telecomsindustrydialogue.org © 2015 Telecommunications Industry Dialogue 3
