2 Know your role (1) REFEREE The referee is the leader of the team of 3 –Early confirmation (SPEAK !) –Meeting time/kit –Match briefing Reminder of primary duties & foul play protocol minimum

3 Know your role (2) ASSISTANT REFEREE –To signal touch, touch in goal, kicks at goal & foul play (PRIMARY DUTIES) –To advise the referee of trends AT STOPPAGES in play PLAY –To communicate to the referee any infringement that has a CRITICAL EFFECT on the game (usually when the referee is unsighted)

4 Know your role (3) ASSISTANT REFEREE –Not there to referee the game –Don’t ball watch –Different positioning –Different mindset –Advise the referee But… DON'T TALK TOO MUCH

5 Foul Play (1) Foul play against team defending –AR Signals foul play & then continues with other duties Flag out then back in again –COMMS... “Foul play by blue” –Next stoppage AR invited onto the field by referee Referee leads the discussion

6 Foul Play (2) Foul play against team in possession –AR Signals foul play Keeps flag out –COMMS… “Foul play by red. Stop the game” –Referee stops the game, AR invited onto the field by referee Referee leads the discussion

7 Reporting Foul Play (1) AR reports: –Players number –Colour or team –Offence After foul play report the referee MAY request a sanction from AR –Reprimand/penalty –Yellow card –Red card

8 Reporting Foul Play (2) When reporting… Verbal's should be “CAC” –Calm –Accurate –Concise Flag held in front of body with both hands

9 Reporting Foul Play (3) Referee repeats the player’s colour, number, offence & sanction to the AR to confirm. Referee delivers decision –Keep it brief & factual. Quote the law. –Think about image, (posture, timing, location on the pitch etc)

10 AR Verbals (1) When the game is in progress an AR intervention is a decision Down time with a problem/solution The game situation determines the level/type of input

11 AR Verbals (2) Areas to assist: –Scrum –Lineout –Offside –In goal/try time The referee should cover what he wants in each of these phases in the briefing
