5 Direct quotes When using direct quotes within a research paper you must include “ ” If you do not put direct quotes in quotation marks you are passing the words as your own. Intentional plagiarism

6 Paraphrasing/Summarizing Be careful about rewriting someone else’s words. Use your own words. Unintentional plagiarism

7 Ideas of Others Give credit to ideas others have thought up. If you present the ideas of another without crediting them, you have plagiarized them. No ideas are truly original. Research Paper Mottos: Give credit where credit is due. It is better to over cite than under cite.

8 Tips for Avoiding Plagiarism Use quotes. When paraphrasing, do not use direct words. Instead interpret what you have read. Essentially, put in your own words. Don’t use the Web to look for “easy’ paper sources.

9 Detecting plagiarized papers Writing style, language, vocabulary, tone, grammar, etc. is different than what you expect from the student. Different writing styles, tones, language, etc. in different parts of paper.
