Assignments 11/5 to 11/9 Monday- Finish Notes and Examples in Succession document. Tuesday- No School: Teacher In-Service Wednesday- Create Venn Diagram or Chart Comparing Primary and Secondary Succession. Thursday- Conference Night Tonight. Complete Succession Extension if you didn’t in class. Friday- Review Notes: No written Homework.

Wednesday, November 7, 2012 OPEN Succession Document from Monday. You should have the pink/yellow highlighted section done for HW. We are going over these parts today!

How does an Ecosystem Change?

Succession The gradual change in an ecosystem in which one biological community is replaced by another. There are two kinds of Succession: – Primary Succession – Secondary Succession

Primary Succession The establishment of a NEW biological community – Example: Area where a volcano erupted, area where a glacier has receded.

Pioneer Species A species that colonizes an uninhabited area and that starts a process of succession Examples: Moss and Lichen

The Hawaiian islands were created by volcanoes, but people don't just think of barren lava beds when they think of Hawaii. After a volcano has erupted there is generally nothing living on the lava. Eventually pioneer species will start to colonize the cracks and crevices. As generations pass, dead plants are broken down by decomposers and become soil material, allowing larger plants begin to settle on the lava. If you look at the lush green jungles of Hawaii today, it's hard to imagine it as the barren rock it once was!pioneer speciesdecomposers

Secondary Succession Gradual change that takes place after a major disturbance to the ecosystem – Examples: Forest after a fire, areas after cutting down the trees or cutting the grass.

Does Succession Ever Stop?? Well not really… changes are always happening but the ecosystem will reach a stable place.

Climax Community A community that has reached a stable stage and uses resources effectively – Examples: Mature Forest, Grasses in prairie, Cacti in deserts

Succession can Start Again… Another disturbance, fire can start the growth and change again.

Pond Succession Gradual change where a pond fills in with debris and becomes wetland or forest.

Create a Venn Diagram Comparing and Contrasting Primary and Secondary Succession.

Warm-up 10/31 Do not write this down…just answer. As succession proceeds, the number of species in an ecosystem increases. A pioneer plant makes the environment more hospitable for 3 other organisms. Each of those in turn allows for 3 more organisms to grow. How many steps would it take to have 40 organisms? Challenge: How many steps would it take to have 100?
