Turnitin.com A Tool for Students and Faculty

Turnitin.com: Step One: Set Up Your Account  Codes needed to set up a faculty account:  School ID Undergrad 17128 Graduate 17098  Account Enrollment Password: PAFi4Bidn  This is case sensitive and should not be given to students.

If you are new to turnitin…  Go to the bar on the right side that allows you go create your account.  You will need to set your username and pass code.  Remember this information because you will use it each time you sign in.

What to do next?  Set up an account for your class.  Remember the code assigned to the class and distribute this to your students.  Your students will need the account number for their specific class to sign in.  Do not give student the Franklin account number.

Assignments  Although most classes have specific assignments that have been designated for Turnitin use, some students will want to use it immediately.  Tell your students which assignments have been designated as Turnitin assignments. In some cases students may want to use turnitin for all of their assignments.  You will have to set up the assignments for them.

Allow Students to View Reports  Check the box “ Let students view their own reports” so that students may see the turnitin.com report results.

The Assignment List  The assignments are listed under the class link

When an Assignment Comes Back “Blue”  Select report to view a student’s submission  When a report on a student is “blue,” generally it means that they have not copied from the Web. It does not mean, however, that they have done citations correctly. The instructor will have to judge their citations.

When an assignment comes back Red or Orange  This designation means that the student has copied heavily from the web, or has used a previously submitted paper.  What to do? When the paper has been submitted with designation, you can have a chat with the student to determine further action.

Remember!  Electronic tools are not infallible.  Just like grammar check, you have to know how to use the tool.  An example: Students may copy questions from their course manual. This will cause their paper to show up with an orange designation unless they cite the manual.

Finally,  Using the turnitin tool will help your students understand what plagiarism is. Encourage them to explore the options that it offers.
