3 Prince Henry the Navigator He was an explorer from Portugal. He never actually sailed. He created a school for navigation, mapmaking and shipbuilding. Great advancements in mapmaking occurred. During the Age of Exploration, explorers navigated using astronomy and geometry.

4 Vasco de Gama Portuguese explorer Established an oversea empire and decimated indigenous populations Vasco de Gama: Mini Biography Circle Map on the left side of your notebook Independently – read the two paragraphs about Vasco de Gama. Glue into your notebook on the right hand side

6 Vasco de Gama Pair-and-share (10 minutes) Answer the following questions on a separate piece of white paper, following the RACE format. Responses should be recorded with a pencil, blue or black ink. 1.Why did the king hire Vasco de Gama? 2.What religion did people in East Africa practice? 3.Did Vasco de Gama reach India? How do you know?

8 Group Readings Treaty of Tordesillas: Drew an imaginary line which allowed Portugal to claim all lands east of 46 degrees longitude, 30 degrees latitude. Spain would claim all lands west of this line. Group Readings – Exploration of East Africa – The Portuguese Conquer East African Swahili City- States – Cabral Claims Brazil

9 Group Readings There are three short reading passages. There are 9 copies of each reading passage. Each reading passage is numbered one through nine. There are 27 total pieces of paper. Ideally, your group will consistent of three students, each having a separate passage. You will have 60 seconds to move and position yourself with your group members. INDEPENDENTLY read the three passages, you will need to share rotate the passages amongst your group members until everyone has read all three pages. (15 minutes)

10 Group Readings Peer Activity: Discuss the readings and answer the five questions on a separate piece of paper (10 minutes). Peer Activity: You will also need to record TWO talking points from your group discussion. Appropriate “on-topic” talking points include but are not limited too… – Open ended questions – Frame of Reference questions – In your own words, what is the overall message of this passage? – What stands out to you as you read? – Why do you think this information is necessary or important? – What is the impact of x on y? – What is the most important phrased in the section? Why? – Predict the next event. – How does this apply to me, to my culture, the world, etc? Each group member is responsible for submitting their own artifact, using the RACE format.

11 Spain Queen Isabella of Aragon and Ferdinand Hapsburg of Castille had consolidated several kingdoms. Spain was determined to gain wealth and new trade routes. Christianity was the religion practiced and promoted by the monarchy.

12 Christopher Columbus Sailed for Spain King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella sponsored Columbus’ voyages If his voyages were successful he asked for three things – The title of “Admiral of the Ocean” – Governor of all new lands – 10% of all riches Total of 4 trips – all to Caribbean and South America Establishment of overseas empires and decimation of indigenous populations

14 The Taínos lived in small farming villages. They were friendly to the Spanish. Christopher Columbus arrived in the West Indies and met the Taíno people in 1492. Despite this, Columbus and his men were hostile. They claimed the land for Spain and killed any Taínos who resisted.

16 Magellan - The Voyage Explored from 1519-1521 Left from Portugal and was killed in the Phillippines Magellan’s crew finished the voyage without him
