1 Inside A Unit 5 - “The Drive to Discover” Essential Question: How do discoveries change us and the world? Skills Determine Main Idea Determine Theme Text structure: sequence, main idea and details, prefix and suffix

2 ORGANIZATION In fiction and non-fiction the author will organize the information in different ways. Understanding the organization will help you understand the author’s ideas better. Fiction The main idea and theme are developed through the details Poems are organized in stanzas, or a set of lines. The title of the poem will tell you what it is about The stanzas include the details that tell you about the main idea and theme Non-Fiction The author wants to tell you about something The author may present the main ideas and then give you details

3 Where are the main idea and details? The main idea is what the text is mostly about Think about it: What is the author mostly telling me about? The supporting details are the sentences that tell about the main idea For example: The Titanic was the largest ship in the world – as long as four city blocks. Many people called it the “Wonder Ships”. It was like a floating palace, with a swimming pool, carved wood, and fancy gold lights.

6 Determining Theme How do readers determine theme? (page 297) Remember the theme is the main message, or what the author is trying to teach you. It says something important about life or the world. To determine the theme: 1.Look for clues in the title 2.Pay attention to the setting 3.“Listen” to the thoughts and watch the actions of the characters 4.Understand the development of the plot

7 Practice Theme “The Forgotten Treasure” Once there was a hunter who lives with his wife and their four sons. Each son had eyes like shiny black stones. The hunter looked at his sons and smiled. “Some men have gold, but my sons are better than gold. They are my treasures.” Every morning the hunter said to his family, “You are all my treasures. If you care about me, remember me always.”
