2 Eating Patterns- food customs and habits- when, what, and how much people eat. ◦ What causes people to have different eating patterns?  Different schedules  Different appetites/metabolism

3 Traditional Meals Breakfast- Most important- your body is on “empty” when you wake up, it needs to be energized and get your motor running. ◦ Benefits:  Easier to concentrate  Do better scholastically Lunch- provides energy and nutrients to carry you through the rest of your day’s activities. Dinner- In America, this is typically the largest meal, focuses on a main dish, a grain product, vegetables, beverage and sometimes dessert

4 Snacks- not necessarily a bad habit. During teen years it can help with rapid body growth. Of course what you choose to snack on, makes a difference. Grazing- Some people prefer eating five or more small meals throughout the day instead of three large meals.

5 Changing Eating Patterns What are eating patterns like in a family with young children? What are eating patterns like in a family with teenagers? ◦ Eat in shifts, busy schedules- games, practices, etc.

6 “Snacking during the teen years has the potential to help as well as the potential to harm.” How is this so?

7 Handout sheet with the family life stages. Have students compare family eating patterns at different stages of life.

9 Eating Out Restaurants 1. Full-service  You sit at a table and a server takes your order  Nutrition varies, depending on menu  Wide-variety or may specialize in fish, steaks, etc.  Red Lobster  Olive Garden  Chop House  Applebee’s  O’Charley’s

10 2. Self-serve ◦ Cafeterias, Buffets, Food bars  Golden Corral  Pizza Hut  Giovanni’s Eating Out

11 3. Fast-food ◦ Limited range of foods, usually high in fat, sugar, sodium ◦ Some fast food restaurants have added healthier options  McDonald’s  Wendy’s  Taco Bell
