LBS Applications Some popular LBS applications –Emergency 911 safety services E.g. disaster rescue –Information services E.g. guided tours –Location based billing services E.g. discount announcement –Tracking and management services E.g. postal packages tracking

Estimation of MS Location To enable the above-mentioned LBS applications, the BS should acquire MS location and track it Three categories of location estimation techniques –Network-based scheme –Terminal-based scheme –Hybrid scheme

Estimation of MS Location (cont.) Network-based Location Estimation Scheme –Angle of arrival (AOA) –Time difference of arrival (TDOA) 1. BS utilizes the AOA measurement or MS performs the TDOA measurement and reports its location to the BS 2. BS will acquire MS location

Estimation of MS Location (cont.) Terminal-based Location Estimation Scheme –Time of arrival (TOA): GPS 1. MS obtains TOA measurement and reports its location to the BS 2. BS will acquire MS location

Estimation of MS Location (cont.) Hybrid Location Estimation Scheme –Combines both the network-based and terminal-based schemes 1. MS obtains TOA measurements and reports it to the BS 2. MS conducts the TDOA measurements and reports it to the BS 3. BS performs the AOA measurements 4. BS estimates and acquires MS location

Simulation results and comparison

Conclusion To enable the LBS applications, the BS should acquire MS location and track it Different categories of location estimation and tracking schemes should be considered under different environments Three main issues should be considered for supporting LBS –Location estimation method –Location parameters to be updated –Parameters updating method
