Shutter DEFINITION:  blades or diaphragm that opens and closes for distinct periods of time to allow light into the camera.  Controls motion.  (Think of your eyelids opening and closing) MOTION:  Stopped or blurred motion is available to the photographer by manipulating the shutter.  Fast shutter speeds stop action.  Slow shutter speeds slow down action. 5. Aperture DEFINITION:  Size of the opening of the lens  the aperture controls light coming into the camera by opening or closing different sizes  (think of your pupils)  Controls depth of field. DEPTH OF FIELD:  Depth of field is the range of sharpness in the photograph.  It’s how much of the focused subject is clear.  There is low and high depth of field.  Foreground, Middleground, and Background APERTURE CHART: f/2 f/2.8 f/4 f/5.6 f/8 f/11 f/16 f/22 f/32 f/64

Exposure DEFINITION:  The amount of light hitting the light sensitive material – either a digital sensor or a piece of film.  The “correct” exposure exposes the material for the correct amount of time to get both highlights and shadows. UNDEREXPOSURE: Not enough light hit the light sensitive material. Image is too dark. OVEREXPOSURE: Too much light hit the light sensitive material. Image is too bright.

9. ISO DEFINITION:  The camera’s sensitivity to light  Think of as if the camera was wearing sunglasses  Higher the number, the more grainy the photo ISO CHART: 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3600
