Electricity & Magnetism Chapter 4

4/21/14 Electromagnets EQ: What is the difference between a bar magnet and an electromagnet? Review outlines (Sheets A – C). Hook: Brain Pop "Electromagnets" Students watch and complete quiz.

What is the difference between a bar magnet and an electromagnet? Guided Practice: Students read and disucss p. 216-219 to complete worksheet on electromagnets. Independent Practice: Vocabulary Words - electromagnet, bar magnet, and pole

4/21/14 Homework Science Homework: Get a good night sleep for CRCT testing tomorrow!

What do you know about static electricity?

Facts to Know electrical charge – basic property of the tiny particles that make up matter; this charge can be positive or negative 0pposite charges – attract same charges – repel (push away from each other) static electricity – the build up of charges in one place; the imbalance of charges Negative charges move, but positive charges do not.

Examples of static charges

Static Electricity What would happen if you combed your hair, then moved the charged comb close to your hair? If you take clothes out of the dryer when they are slightly damp, they don’t stick together. Why not?

Answers: The opposite charges would cause the comb to attract the hair. Charges can’t be rubbed off unless the clothes are completely dry.

Home work 4/14/14 Brain Pop “Static Electricity” Watch and take quiz. Vocabulary: static electricity electricity electrical charge

Essential Question What is the difference between static electricity and current electricity?

Power Point Open computer to 330 - Fitting Electricity Open Power Point Mrs. Fitting Find “Electricity PPT 5 th grade”

What makes a circuit? Classwork Assignment Read text p. 190 -195 Read and complete the outline. Draw the four types of circuits (open, closed, series, & parallel).

Homework: 4/16/14 Brain Pop “Electric Currents” Watch and take quiz. Vocabulary to define & illustrate: open circuit closed circuit parallel circuit series circuit

Essential Question What are the differences between conductors and insulators?

What are conductors and Insulators? Read text p. 206 -209. Students complete outline. In Science Lab book, students label one page conductors and another insulators. (Define each term and give several examples of each.)

Homework: 4/17/14 Brain Pop "Conductors" Students watch Brain Pop and take quiz. Vocabulary to define & illustrate: conductor insulator current
