Writing Instructional Objectives Dr. Belal Hijji, RN, PhD October 18, 2011

2 Learning Outcomes At the end of this session, students will be able to: Demonstrate their ability to write down instructional objectives

3 Introduction After completing instructional goals, there is a need to identify the learner’s performance indicators demonstrating his mastery of taught content. An instructional objective has two essential components. These are: –A specific behaviour which is an action verb that describes an observable student response. –An object identifies the focus of learning —content, concept, skill, or attitude. However, instructional objectives may have optional components provide clarity and may include elements the target group, conditions, defined content, performance criteria, and performance stability.

4 Figure 1. Components of Instructional Objectives

5 Example 1: An Objective Illustrating the Essential & Optional Components Following related workshops, the student will demonstrate the accurate technique for assessing vaginal labor progress and delivery (with attention to intrapartum assessment of the fetus, monitoring of maternal labor, the four stages of delivery, episiotomy, and indications for cesarean birth) utilizing a synthetic model, and meeting the criteria established by the instructor and clinical preceptor.  Behavior: demonstrate  Object: technique for assessing labor progress and delivery  Conditions: following related workshops utilizing a synthetic model  Defined Content: with attention to intrapartum assessment of the fetus, monitoring of maternal labor, the four stages of delivery, episiotomy, and indications for cesarean birth  Performance Criteria: meeting the criteria established by the instructor  Performance Stability: by the instructor and clinical preceptor

6 Example 2: An Objective Illustrating the Essential & Optional Components Following demonstration and re-demonstration, each student will show the proper way for writing an instructional objective (with attention to the essential and optional components) using a pen and paper, and meeting the criteria established by the Faculty and clinical instructor.  Behavior: show  Object: proper way for writing an instructional objective  Conditions: following demonstration and re-demonstration using a pen and paper  Defined Content: with attention to the essential and optional components  Performance Criteria: meeting the criteria established by the Faculty  Performance Stability: by the Faculty and clinical instructor
