4 A.G.G.R.E.S.S.I.O.N Causes of World War II

5 Appeasement Europeans responded to Hitler’s actions prior to September 1939 by following a policy of appeasement through the Munich Agreement. Appeasement– giving in to aggressive demands in order to maintain peace.

6 European leaders allowed Nazi Germany to expand because: nations were exhausted financially and militarily following WWI they thought that directly confronting Nazi Germany would lead to WWII They thought Nazi Germany provided a natural buffer to the Soviet Union.

7 G: Germans take Austria and Czechoslovakia

8 The Munich Agreement Hitler wanted to unite all German- speaking people in Europe. First, Hitler took over Austria without opposition in March 1938. At a meeting in Munich, the British and French Prime Ministers agreed not to stop Hitler from invading Czechoslovakia. The Munich Agreement is an example of appeasement.

12 Invasion of Poland, VideoVideo Hitler staged an attack by Polish troops in Germany as an excuse to attack Poland. WWII began after Germany invaded Poland.

17 I: Italy Wants Land In order to unite Italians under fascism, Benito Mussolini joined forces with Adolf Hitler. Mussolini hoped to gain foreign colonies so Italy could support industrialization.

18 CFU’s 1. Why were Germany and Italy upset with the Treaty of Versailles? 2. What did both Italy and Germany want to do because of this treaty? 3. How might the U.S. feel about this new war in Europe? Why?

20 U.S. Isolationism, VideoVideo In the 1930’s, the United States attempted to avoid a repetition of the events leading up to United States’ involvement in WWI by passing a series of neutrality laws. Neutrality Laws– a set of laws that said that the US would remain neutral and not join either side.
