4 General Suggestions Begin planning your event at least eight weeks in advance Ideal Speaker has Duke or local connection/interest Local Speaker Speaker from campus Duke Faculty Fellows If a volunteer has a relationship, feel free to reach out directly Be willing to cold call alums For Duke speakers, attendance is crucial 40-50 attendees minimum (non-alums welcome) No empty rooms; make it worth the speaker’s time Less likely to speak again if disappointed

5 Resources for Finding a Local Speaker People with whom regional volunteers have relationships Duke Alumni Directory (www.dukedirectory.com) Search Options Search by employer, location, class year, etc. DukeConnect (www.dukeconnect.com)www.dukeconnect.com DAA’s networking tool Contains career and employment info Those listed have opted to speak with students/alumni Alumni profiles and class notes in Duke Magazine Websites of local companies Local news and publications Local Speaker
