Mountains A mountain is land that rises to a high peak. Northern Georgia has many mountains. Pg. 278

Mountains The mountains get more rain and snow than any other part of the state. The mountains can be warm in summer, but temperatures often drop below freezing in winter.

Mountains The mountain region provides habitats for many plants and animals. Animals that live in the mountains must be able to survive cold winters. Bobcats and skunks grow more fur in the winter to help them stay warm.

Mountains Mountain soils are usually very rocky and shallow. Where the soil is only a few inches deep, grasses, wildflowers, and small shrubs grow. Where the soil is deeper, forests or oaks, maples, poplars, and beeches cover the land. Evergreen trees grow near the top of the mountains. Closer to the bottoms, azaleas and mountain laurel grow.

The Piedmont In Georgia, the piedmont is the region just south of the mountains. The piedmont has many rolling hills. A thick layer of red clay soil covers much of the piedmont. Many streams and small rivers run through the region. Pg. 280

The Piedmont Before people settled in Georgia, the piedmont had mostly oak and hickory trees. Settlers cut down the trees and cleared the land for farms. The forests that grew back had mostly pine trees. Sweet gums, beeches, maples, elms, and birches still grow near the rivers.

The Piedmont Birds, chipmunks, deer, fox, squirrels, and white- footed mice are a few of the animals that live in the piedmont. Spotted salamanders survive in the forests by eating worms, insects, and snails. They hunt at night and live under logs during the day.

The Piedmont Shoal bass, sunfish, and catfish live in piedmont rivers. Beavers build dams and lodges on the smaller streams. In fields and pastures, you can find butterflies, birds, foxes, and coyotes.
