The free and slave states  11 free states  11 slave states  Missouri wanted to be a slave state

The problem?  Since Missouri wanted to become a slave state, the government would become unbalanced between the free and slave states.  There would be more control to the slave states.

Who was involved?  The U.S Congress  The House of Representatives  The Senate

The U.S Congress  The U.S was involved with the regulation of slavery in the western territories.  They prohibited slavery in the Louisiana Territory

The House of Representatives  The House decided to refuse the compromise, and decided to appoint a conference committee.  Protected the free states.

The U.S Senate  The Senate decided to refuse the conference committee and the whole measure was lost.

The pro-slave constitution  In St. Louis, Missouri a convention passes a pro-slave constitution.  Maine= free state  Missouri= slave state  After they passed these states Missouri was committed to the Union. Maine Missouri

The balance  Since Missouri was a slave state and Maine became a free state.  It equaled out the balance with free and slave states.  Which now had 12 free and 12 slave states. SLAVE FREE

The conditions  Since Missouri became a slave state they set a new rule for the slave states.  That once a slave hits the age 25 they could be set free.  States above the Missouri Compromise line banned slavery.

1854: Kansas Nebraska Act  Repealed the Missouri Compromise in 1854.  They said that people in the non- slave territories could determine if they wanted to be a slave or free state.  Stephen A. Douglas designed this act.
