5 Business Breakfasts A business breakfast series is an opportunity to bring together business and civic leaders and a mix of Duke alumni from the undergraduate, graduate and professional schools. Recommended that speakers have a Duke connection, at least in the early stages of the series.

6 General Criteria for Business Breakfasts The following criteria serve as a framework for your breakfast Held 7:30 am to 9:00 am weekdays Tuesdays through Thursdays preferable Choose a centrally located venue Consistent location important; attendees learn logistics Regular location makes planning easier (menu, set-up, etc.) Reserve venue in advance for estimated group size Advise info about parking and logistics with registration Send relevant info about speaker or topic prior to breakfast Around $15 each, including coffee, juice and breakfast items

7 Establish and open online registration at least one month prior to event DAA E-blast to local alumni to publicize the event (4-6 weeks before); DAA reminder (2 weeks before); registrant reminder (day before) DAA works with host volunteer to coordinate contract with venue Publicize using Facebook, LinkedIn and other social media Include on region’s website and in regional e-newsletter Ask local alumni to use their personal networks to promote Publicity

8 Welcome Table for Check-in DAA provides Duke nametags and “Forever Duke” pins Walk-ins fill out form (name, class year, email address) Format 7:30 am to 8:00 am: Check-in and networking 8:00 am: Host welcomes all attendees, introduces Duke staff 8:05 am: Duke staff (if present) gives brief update from DAA 8:10 am: Host introduces speaker(s) 8:40 am: Speaker concludes formal remarks, host invites questions from guests 8:50 am: Host halts questions, thank speaker and guests Recommended Details For Day of Event

9 Speaker may have a Powerpoint or Other Presentation A/V system should be tested prior to event start Speaker may prefer to be “interviewed” Questions and topics agreed on in advance Interviewer may be host or some other person Speaker and host mutually agree to end promptly by 9:00 am Allow time for Q&A Host presents speaker with a Duke gift (book or mug) DAA reimburses the host for the cost of the gift Speaker Responsibilities And Needs

He will also provide an update on its new facility adjacent to Centennial Olympic Park, the New World of Coca-Cola and the Georgia Aquarium. Bring your friends and colleagues for what is sure to be an engaging discussion.”

12 Regional Board Compiles List of Potential Speakers with DAA Input Desirable Characteristics for Consideration Duke Connection Unique Expertise Prominent Position Organizations in the News Local Issue of Importance or Interest Contacting a Potential Speaker Contact Directly, Promoting Previous Speakers and Location Use Personal or Business Relationships Allow Flexibility of Scheduling Speaker Selection

13 Timeline August - Establish venue for the series; set calendar for 3-4 breakfasts Arrange dates with potential speakers; make reservations asap 3-4 Weeks Out - Open registration and DAA-generated e-blast 2 Weeks Out - Request supplies from DAA 1 Week Out - Promote event on social media 1 Day Out - Reminder to attendees and venue confirming details Day Of - Arrive early with sign-up sheets and name tags 1-2 Days After - Send attendance list to DAA; follow-up e-mail to attendees
