You can learn about yourself Putting yourself in a competitive environment allows you to discover how you can strive for and achieve something that at first you thought you might not be able to. You can learn from others You can pick up new skills and techniques from others. These will help you in your first competition and in the ones that follow. You can continuously develop Every time you take part in a competition you learn something new. This helps you to become better and perfect your skills.

3 3 | Being Competition Ready Being Competition Ready Competition Checklist Before the competition you should receive information on the following: Where and when the competition will be taking place and information about registration onsite Whether there are any rules specific to your competition that you should know about. The skills you are expected to have to carry out the tasks within the competition. What equipment you may/should bring with you. What the arrangements for catering are.

4 4 | Being Competition Ready Being Competition Ready Control The Controllable Make sure that you understand the rules and criteria that will govern your performance when you are competing.

All competitors will be given the competition brief, relevant technical descriptions and if applicable a toolkit check list for their skill. There will be a briefing on additional tools and equipment. If required, before the start of the competition, competition organisers will check for prohibited materials, tools and equipment in accordance with the toolkit check list.

6 6 | Being Competition Ready Being Competition Ready Past Competitor Questions What do I do if I am ill? Competition organisers must be told immediately if a competitor is ill or has an accident. They will then decide whether time lost can be made up.

Failure by a competitor to comply with health and safety directions or instructions may incur a loss of marks in respect of inadequate safety.

No contact may be made with other competitors or guests during competition time without the permission of the competition organisers.

Competitors will be given the general assessment criteria, objective marking forms and summary of competition rules before the competition. Know and understand these to guide your decision.
