3 Negativism Doing the opposite of what others want. INDEPENDENCE! They say no so they can make the decision Frustration: bodies aren’t developed enough and language skills. Realization of being separate person Battle of wills Just put things away instead of saying don’t touch

4 Positive Guidance Give choices (2): exercise control “which will you pick up first.. The game or toys” Redirect: attention off issue Encourage talking: use words to communicate Temper tantrums: help child find other ways.

5 Two Years Speech and motor skills have improved relieving frustration Wait longer for needs to be met. Express love, affection, and seeks approval/praise Easier to reason with More outgoing and friendly, less self centered

6 Two and Half Year Old Difficult phase… Not so easily distracted anymore Learning so much they feel overwhelmed Comprehension and desires exceed physical abilities Independence and immaturity clash head on. Stubborn and demanding Moods change rapidly

7 2.5 years Consistency: routines Sometimes they want help, sometimes not Love and patience is essential! Need flexible limitations

8 Three Years Sunny and cooperative Considerate Directions, modify behavior for praise. Fewer temper tantrums Like to talk Can be reasoned with

9 Three and a Half Suddenly very insecure Parents can feel child is going backwards Fears are commons May start habits: thumb sucking, nail biting, nose picking Control environment

10 Emotions Expressed openly until age 2 or 3. 3 year old uses words 1.5 kicks and screams

11 Anger Three year olds less violent: name calling or pouting Target of anger changes: age 2-3 now directs anger toward person or object Frustration turns into anger Caregivers shouldn’t react angrily

12 Fear Some fears are useful—keep away from danger. Dog Separation anxiety: fear of being away from parents, caregivers, normal environments

13 Dealing with Fear Offer support/understanding Encourage talking Accept fear Make them feel more secure How to control fear: turn on light in dark

14 Jealousy Recognizable during 2 nd year 1.5 very pronounced Age 3: peak then lessons Parents Sibling rivalry: competition for parents love

15 Love and Affection Young children must learn to love First love for those who satisfy needs Gradually expands Relationships should be strong but not smothering.

16 Empathy Ability to put oneself in another’s place. Between first birthday and 1.5 children understand actions can hurt others. Caregivers can help: tell child to apologize when toy is taken

17 EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT Explain the Emotional Rollercoaster for 1-3. What causes negativism? How do children 1-3 years express Anger differently? How should parent/caregiver handle Fears? What contributes to a two year olds temper tantrums? How can parents/caregivers help develop 1-3 self-esteem?
