2 What is Cancer?  (Standard 5.b, Cancer)  STATE STANDARD: 5. The anatomy and physiology of plants and animals illustrate the complementary nature of structure and function.  5.b. organ systems function because of the contribution of individual organs, tissues, and cells. The failure of any part can affect the entire systems.

3 What is Cancer?  A mutation changes the DNA causing cells to multiply uncontrollably forming a tumor & killing healthy tissues around it.

4 What is Cancer?  Two kinds of tumors…  Malignant = spreading tumor into other tissues (cancerous) BAD  Benign = non cancerous tumor. GOOD

6 Cancer Causes  UV rays - from sunlight

7 Cancer Causes  Tanning booths

8 Cancer Causes  Fatty foods and sweets  Tobacco - smoking or chewing

9 Cancer Causes  Soot - black tar from chimneys  Asbestos - found in walls of old buildings

10 Cancer Treatment  Radiation - High energy beams of light to blow up the Cancer cells.

11 Cancer Treatment  Chemotherapy - strong drugs to destroy cancer cells in the blood with loss of hair as a side effect.

12 Cancer Treatment  Surgery - operation to remove any tumor cells from the body that radiation or chemotherapy can not get.

13 Cancer Prevention  Sun Block - to protect from UV rays  Proper Diet - healthy foods

14 Cancer Prevention  No smoking or chewing tobacco  Mask for working with soot or asbestos.
