Parts to the Writer’s Workshop Mini Lesson (5-10 min) Work Time/Conferencing (15-20 min) Share Time (5 min)

Mini-Lesson Brief- Teacher led Explicit- Teach one skill or strategy in child friendly terms… “Today you will learn ….” Consistent- In structure and routine

Work/Conference Time Student’s Role: Be self selecting writing topics Writing in the same genre Be given choices about what to write about Discussing topics and writing with partners Teacher’s Role: Conference with students Have a plan to meet with students End the conference with a next step

Share Time During work time the teacher is looking for 2-3 students applying the mini-lesson with some success (not everyone will share). These students will get the chance to share their writing with the whole group.

During Sharing Time Praise- offer positive, specific, critical feedback (e.g. “Your use of dialogue helped me to understand your story better.” Question- ask an open-ended writerly question (e.g. “Why did you choose to write on that topic?”) Suggest- Offer a tip to improve the student’s writing (e.g. “Good writer’s re-read their work to make sure it makes sense.”)
