MODULE: 5 SALVAGE, OVERHAUL, AND SUPPORT ACTIVITIES

OBJECTIVES Module 5 Identify the principles and tactics to achieve salvage. Identify the principles and tactics to achieve overhaul Identify and explain the activities required to support incident operations.

SALVAGE OPERATIONS

Salvage The tactical operation of protecting property from damage.

Principles of Salvage To minimize damage to building and contents To protect building from structural damage due to weight of water

Salvage Tactics Protect building contents — In-place — By removal Control water flow within building Remove water from building

Salvage Tactics (cont’d) Ventilate to remove smoke and heat Remove debris from building Cover building openings to protect from weather

What factors must be considered in a tactical sizeup for salvage?

Tactical Sizeup For Salvage What is most important to save? How will you protect items being moved? What salvage tactics will be used? Is any support required? What coordination is needed? What safety concerns exist? How effective is salvage effort?

Coordination and Planning Rapid extinguishment reduces loss Conserve water during firefighting operations Ventilate early

Develop a Salvage Tactical Action Plan Determine critical sizeup factors Identify and prioritize property to be protected Select appropriate salvage tactics

Develop a Salvage Tactical Action Plan (cont’d) Identify needed resources Identify needed support Determine need for coordination Identify safety concerns

OVERHAUL OPERATIONS

Overhaul Overhaul is the action taken to expose hidden fire and to assure complete extinguishment.

Principles of Overhaul Extinguish all smoldering contents Check for and extinguish hidden fires or extension

Overhaul Tactics Extinguish spot fires and smoldering fires Open walls and voids Prevent rekindles Do work in unsafe areas

What factors must be considered in a tactical sizeup for overhaul?

Tactical Sizeup for Overhaul What is the condition of the building? Is the area safe for overhaul? What hidden areas have been exposed?

Tactical Sizeup for Overhaul (cont’d) Are there spot fires? What provision has been made for relief crews? Will overhaul interfere with origin/cause investigation?

Overhaul Coordination Coordinate with salvage operations Firefighters may complete overhaul while completing salvage Coordinate with investigators

Develop an Overhaul Tactical Action Plan Determine critical sizeup factors Identify location of smoldering and potential hidden fire areas Select appropriate overhaul tactics

Develop an Overhaul Tactical Action Plan (cont’d) Identify needed resources Determine needed support Determine needed coordination Identify safety concerns Evaluate effectiveness

SUPPORT ACTIVITIES

Support Activities Support activities are tasks carried out at fire incidents to support ongoing tactical operations.

Principles of Support Activities Control all utilities Provide compressed breathing air Provide scene lights and electricity Provide for firefighter rehabilitation and rehydration Provide for medical monitoring and treatment of personnel

Control all Utilities Use appropriate personnel Coordinate with other operations and IC Control fuels Shut off electricity to involved areas Control water

Other Support Activities Air supply Scene lighting and electricity Firefighter rehabilitation and rehydration Medical monitoring and treatment Animal control

Summary Salvage tactics protect property from the damage caused by fire Overhaul tactics assure that the fire is completely extinguished Support activities support all ongoing fire incident operations
