Taoism “The Way”

Tao (pronounced "Dow")  Translated into English as path, or the way.  It refers to a power which envelops, surrounds and flows through all things, living and non-living. It is most similar to our concept of a life force.

Founder – Lao Tsu  Alternative spellings: Lao Tze, Lao Tse, Lao Tzu, Laozi, Laotze  There is some debate as to whether a man named Lao Tsu actually existed.  Some scholars believe Lao Tsu is actually a mythical character.  Others claim that Lao Tsu is a pen name given to a collection of writers who contributed to the Tao Te Ching.

Biography of Lao Tsu  Most scholars believe Lao Tsu lived just before Confucius. ( BC)  He worked as the Keeper of the Archives for the royal court of the Chou.  He did not open a formal school, but he had many students and disciples.

Biography of Lao Tsu (cont.)  Members of the T’ang Dynasty claimed to be descended from a son of Lao Tsu.  The stories of Lao Tsu claim that he left society because of its corruption to live as a hermit. Before leaving, he was asked by a city guard to write down his teachings. The result is the Tao Te Ching.

Major Beliefs of Taoism  Tao is the cause of the universe. It is a force that flows through all life.  Each believer’s goal is to harmonize with the Tao.  Each person must nurture the Chi (air, breath) that has been given to them.  Development of compassion, moderation and humility are important goals.  Taoists follow the art of “wu wei”  It translates “non-action”.  It teaches followers to let nature take its course. (ie. go with the flow)  Yin Yang represents balance in the universe.  The Taoist beliefs are found in the Tao Te Ching (The Book of the Way).
