Aim #7: What are the similarities and differences between Confucianism and Daoism? Analyze the comparison chart and answer the following questions: Confucianism argues that formal education provides the knowledge that will lead to success and shape your personality, while Daoism argues that the knowledge you gain from everyday experiences is much more valuable. Which philosophy do you agree with more on this issue, and why? Based on the chart and our discussions from last week, which philosophy do you think will do the most effective job of bringing order and harmony to a society? Why? Which philosophy would you be most likely to follow in your own life? Why? The chart focuses on the major differences between these philosophies. Are there any similarities?

Confucianism vs. Daoism Confucianism (recorded in the Analects) Emphasis on Social Order (family/government) Path to Knowledge: Formal education (schools, classes, teachers, etc) Human Control: Should be enforced by the five family relationships and a strong, stable government Ideas about government Rulers are “superior men” and role models for all people. They should be respected in all cases. Rebellion is not acceptable Daoism (recorded in the Dao De Ching) Emphasis on Natural Order Path to Knowledge: Experiences in the natural world (“school of life”) Human Control: Man should free himself from artificial laws and traditions of government/family, behave naturally and spontaneously Ideas about government Is not really necessary for peace and stability in society
