Equality Information Session 2 March 2010

Purpose What is the Equality Standard Raise awareness of importance of equality for sporting organisations See the Equality Standard from a governing body perspective Bring equality to the forefront of sporting organisations consciousness

What is the Equality Standard National framework for achieving equity in sport Help meet legal duties Better policies / practices Better understanding of members, volunteers and the services More effective targeting of scarce resources Satisfy funding requirements Increase participation / performance

Outcomes 3 outcomes to be achieved Your organisation is committed to equality Your organisation has an equality policy that has been communicated and is understood by staff and key volunteers Your organisation is aware of its current profile in terms of equality

Outcome 1 Outcome 1: Your organisation is committed to equality. Set accountability for equality at the highest level in the organisation: e.g. named person accountable for equality Commit staff time and budget to equality: e.g. specify budget, include in job/role description Ensure all those involved in your organisation are aware of this commitment: e.g. a communication with Board & staff, public commitment (article on website, etc)

Outcome 2 Outcome 2: Your organisation has an equality policy that has been communicated and is understood by staff and key volunteers. Develop a policy for equality e.g. review policy; consult with staff/members Raise awareness/educate board & staff: e.g. provide training/briefing session(s) Disseminate and communicate the policy throughout the organisation e.g. website postings/induction/job packs

Outcome 3 Outcome 3: Your organisation is aware of its current profile in terms of equality. Conduct an audit of (1) profile staff, volunteers, board, members/ participants, coaches, officials, service users, elite performers. The audit must profile: gender, disability, race, age. (2) review HR policies i.e. recruitment/selection and marketing/communications. Analyse the findings in terms of trends and equality impact e.g. Compare data collected with local census or other data available; identify gaps in representation by equality groups; make recommendations for action

Current situation 4 governing bodies at ‘foundation’ level Sports Council Equality Group due to undertake review of Equality Standard –Accessible –Outcomes based –Compatibility with Sport/Region specific situations
