The Scientific Method in six easy steps
Goal: Use the steps of the scientific method to determine whether or not your best friend is a werewolf (vampire, witch, etc.).
Scientific Method Step 1: Observe and question Notice something and ask a question about it. Step 2: Gather information Find out what people already know.
Scientific Method Step 3: Hypothesize Make an educated guess about the answer. Step 4: Test Conduct experiments to test the hypothesis.
Scientific Method Step 5: Analyze Record and analyze your data. What do you notice? Step 6: Conclude/decide Come to a conclusion. Is your hypothesis right or wrong?
An Example:
Step 1: Hey, I took a test while chewing gum, and I passed. Was it because of the gum? Step 2: Wikipedia, BusinessWeek and my best friend all say that chewing gum helps concentration.
Step 3: I’m guessing that your test scores will go up if you chew gum while you take the test. Step 4: I’ll give kids a test. Some will chew gum, while others will not.
Step 5: My data show that test scores actually went down among gum chewers. Step 6: It appears that chewing gum does not improve your performance on tests. Bummer!
Teachers win again.
Write a graphic novel (minimum of eight frames) in which you use science to figure out if your best friend is a werewolf, vampire, witch, etc. Use all six steps of the scientific method! You will have captions (words) and illustrations. To receive all 5 summative points, you must illustrate your understanding of the scientific method!!
Ground rules: Your friend doesn’t have to wind up being a werewolf. Nobody dies. Label the steps with subheadings in your story.
