Elements of Romanticism 19 th Century: New movement in the arts called Romanticism Emotion & feelings were key elements of Romanticism The ideas of Romanticism included: 1. Inner feelings, emotions and imagination 2. Focus on the mysterious, supernatural, exotic and horrifying 3. Glorifying heroes and heroic actions 4. Valued the common person including folk traditions, music, stories 5. Literature British poets like Keats & Wordsworth honored nature as the source of beauty & truth German writers like the Grimm Brothers wrote fairy tales, while Johann von Goethe wrote a love story that ends in suicide (Young Werther) French writers such as Victor Hugo produced Les Miserables & The Hunchback of Notre Dame The Gothic Novel became popular when a story about a monster being created from dead body parts was told in Mary Wollstonecraft- Shelley’s Frankenstein
