Watershed Parameters for Water Rights in the Trinity River Basin Melissa Figurski CE 394K

Project Goal Determine Watershed Parameters for Water Rights in the Trinity Basin Upstream Area Average Upstream Precipitation Average Upstream Curve Number

Purpose Water Availability Modeling State Mandated Resource Planning and Management TNRCC, CRWR, and Contractor

Data Requirements 30-meter Digital Elevation Model (DEM) Stream Network Water Right Locations Curve Number Grid Precipitation Grid

Previous Method Wrap1117.apr Developed by Brad Hudgens 6 Basins completed with Wrap1117

Trinity River Basin

Why not use the old method? 237 million grid cells 11-day processing 1649 water rights

New Idea Separate the Trinity into smaller watersheds (HUCs) Use Wrap1117 on individual HUCs Account for upstream contributions with ArcInfo 8

Procedure

Delineate HUC Watersheds Burn stream network into DEM Locate outlet points for each HUC Buffer each HUC Clip burned DEM to buffered HUC Run ArcInfo workstation ‘fill’, ‘flowaccumulation’, and ‘watershed’ commands on each buffered HUC

Outlet Points Locate Outlet Points for each HUC

Buffer HUCs and Clip DEM 5000 meter bufferClipped DEM

ArcInfo Workstation Functions Fill burned DEM Determine flow direction and flow accumulation Delineate HUC watershed Flow Direction+Outlet Cells=Watershed

Completed Delineation

Delineation Problems

Gather Data Select water rights and stream network in HUC

WRAP1117 Flow direction stream network

WRAP1117 Snap Points to Stream Network

WRAP1117 Average PrecipitationAverage Curve Number

WRAP1117 Create Network Schematic

WRAP1117 Delineate Incremental Watersheds

WRAP1117 Read Water Right Parameters

Future Work

ArcInfo 8 Create network

ArcInfo 8 Set flags at inlet and outlet ‘Find Path’ between outlets Export water rights on path Add upstream data in table

Summary New method needed Segment basin into HUC units Run Wrap1117 on individual HUCs Use ArcInfo 8 to account for upstream data
