Chapter 15 – section 4

First Law of Motion  Also called the “Law of Inertia”  Inertia – the tendency of an object to stay at rest or remain in motion. It is measured by the object’s mass.  Greater mass = greater inertia  The law states: An object in rest tends to stay at rest and an object in motion tends to stay in motion UNLESS acted upon by an outside force.

Amount of inertia is determined by the mass !

Inertia in motion When you slam on the breaks, the car stops but you keep going! That’s why you wear seatbelts!

Second Law of Motion  States that the acceleration of an object depends on the mass of the object and the size of the force applied.

Third Law of Motion  Also known as the “law of action-reaction”  The law states: When a force is applied to an object, the object exerts an equal force in the opposite direction.

Forces come in pairs- The action force and the reaction force.
