What does a rose symbolize?

Symbolism Symbolism is the use of an object, person, situation, or word to represent something else in literature.

Satire Satire is the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people's stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues.

As we read: You will need to take notes on the symbols we discuss. You do not need to copy the slides word for word but you will need to take enough notes to understand each symbol.

Setting Just outside of Boston, Massachusetts Near a wooded swamp Importance of setting:  This swamp is the place where characters must confront the nature of their own beings and moral makeup.

Characters Tom Walker  “A meager, miserly fellow,”  Dislikes his wife Tom Walker’s Wife  “A miserly woman”, “a tall termagant”, “fierce of temper”, “loud of tongue”, and “strong arm” Old Scratch  The devil, goes by many names, “a shock of coarse black hair, that stood out from his head in all directions”
