I can… Identify the thesis and main points of a speech. Organize ideas in the most effective order for an oral presentation. Identify the audience and purpose of a speech.

Introductory Paragraph “Na-na, na-na” playing, jaws gnashing, everyone has opinions about sharks. Most people have a fear of sharks because of how these animals are portrayed in movies. Some people, however, realize the importance of these “remarkable creatures” and are trying to save them. Sharks are incredible creatures because of their unique physical qualities, their lifestyle, and the ongoing quest to save these endangered animals.

Not only do sharks have interesting appearances and lifestyles, they are also endangered animals that are need to be protected. The author states that sharks are endangered because of shark finning. Because shark fin soup is such a delicacy and such an important cultural tradition in China, many hunters will go to extremes to capture these animals. The article then asserts that due to finning many laws have been put in place to protect sharks. However, these laws that limit where and how many sharks can be captured are sometimes hard to enforce in the open waters of the ocean. Additionally, sharks are sometimes caught in nets and simply thrown back into the ocean dead. This futile killing of sharks is being fought as people become more aware that sharks are in danger. Sharks are scavengers controlling the population of other species and provide food for killer whales; therefore, their importance to the food chains would be a great benefit to work on enforcing the protection of sharks.
